Mercury Testing

Avogadro also has extensive experience with metals testing in air emissions.  Avogadro can provide informational and compliance testing using USEPA Method 29, USEPA Method 324 (40CFR75, Appendix K), and ASTM D6784-02 (Ontario Hydro) protocols. Each method has its own advantages/disadvantages:

Method 29 measures total mercury emissions, although distinct emission values for particle-bound and total gaseous emissions are available from this method. It is applicable to a wide variety of sources and can also be used to measure other metals and particulate matter in the same sample.

ASTM D6784-02 is applicable to measuring total mercury emissions only.  With this method, emission values for different forms of mercury (i.e. elemental, organic, particle-bound) are measured. It is also applicable to a wide variety of sources, although it is a somewhat complicated and relatively costly method to run.

Method 324 is designed to measure emissions over a wide range of time-periods. Whereas Method 29 and ASTM D6784-02 are typically sampled for 1 to 3 hours, Method 324 can be used to sample from minutes to days. It measures total gaseous mercury emissions only, so it is best applied to sources with little or no particle-bound mercury. It is also a fairly simple, cost-effective and sensitive method, which offers an option for quick, on-site sample analysis.
